Where Home-Baked Joy Meets Family Tradition
There’s something special about using your hands and your imagination to create something that brings joy to another. I’ve often picked the prettiest cupcake or cutest cookie in a bakery case—only to be disappointed by the taste. I realized what I was missing was the homemade goodness of my family’s recipes. The flavors, textures, and care I grew up with just couldn’t be found anywhere else. So, I went back to my roots. Back to my own kitchen. And just like that, The Dough Bunny Bakery was born.
Christmas has always been my favorite time of year—partly because of the memories, mostly because of the treats. Some of my earliest and warmest memories are of baking cinnamon sugar cookies with my grandmother and mom. Rolling dough, choosing cookie cutters, and filling the kitchen with the smell of sugar and spice was pure magic.
I carried that tradition with me into adulthood, baking those same cookies throughout the year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, baking became both a coping tool and a creative outlet. I taught myself to decorate with royal icing, inspired by the Santabear cookies from Marshall Fields that I loved as a child. That evolution turned a beloved holiday ritual into something I could share with others year-round.
Beyond the Bakery
When I’m not baking, I’m teaching high school science—sophomore chemistry and senior anatomy have been my world for over two decades. On test days, my students know treats are coming (because tough calculations are always easier with cookies).
At home, I spend time with my husband, Mike, and our two greyhounds, Cindy Lou and Bingo. Mike and I met when I was a paramedic and he was a firefighter—now he’s a fire lieutenant and still my biggest supporter (and most honest taste tester).
Outside of the kitchen and classroom, I lease a wonderful showjumper named Midas. Learning to ride has challenged me physically and mentally, but it’s reminded me what it’s like to be a student again. The frustration, the breakthroughs, and the support of my instructor and "barn girls" have given me the courage to try hard things, fail, and keep going—something I carry with me into every cookie I decorate.
And Finally... What’s a Dough Bunny?
Before teaching, I was a paramedic. One day during a firehouse meal rotation, Mike snuck a raw biscuit off the tray before it went in the oven. In his best National Geographic voice, he whispered: "And the unsuspecting dough bunny falls prey to the great raptor!"
From that moment on, raw dough was lovingly dubbed “dough bunnies” in our home, and the name stuck.
The Dough Bunny Bakery is a tribute to those playful moments, family traditions, and the joy of creating something from scratch. Rooted in love and fueled by joy, every treat is made with care and intention, and I hope you can taste that in every bite.
Thank you for being here. I can’t wait to bake something special for you. 🐰🍪
